A Simple Month-End Bookkeeping Checklist

A regular month-end routine helps keep business records organised and makes it easier to spot missing information. Use this checklist as a starting point and adapt it to the way your business operates.

Gather the documents

Collect sales invoices, purchase bills, receipts, bank statements and credit card statements for the month. Keep supporting documents together so each entry can be traced back to its source.

Record outstanding transactions

Check that sales, expenses, receipts and payments have been entered. Flag unclear transactions for review rather than guessing their purpose.

Reconcile your accounts

Compare your accounting records with bank and card statements. Investigate differences, duplicate entries and transactions that have not yet cleared.

Review receivables and payables

Check which customer invoices remain unpaid and which supplier bills are due. Keep a clear record of follow-ups, disputed amounts and agreed payment dates.

Review the reports

Look through the Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet and outstanding-balance reports. Note unusual movements and questions to discuss with your accountant or finance support team.

Keep a record of open items

List missing documents and unresolved differences, assign someone to follow up, and keep a dated copy of the completed review.
